Chattanooga Choo Choo

All Aboard for the Afterlife

Built 19097 min readBy Tim Nealon
The Chattanooga Choo Choo, once the grand Terminal Station built in 1909, served as a major railroad hub until 1970. This Beaux-Arts masterpiece witnessed countless tearful goodbyes, joyful reunions, and tragic accidents. Now a hotel complex with restored train cars, the spirits of railroad workers, passengers who never reached their destinations, and those who died on the tracks still haunt this historic terminal.

The Chattanooga Choo Choo has long been known as one of the most haunted places in all of Chattanooga. Guests have been reporting run-ins with ghostly visitors almost as long as it has been open. One of our favorite haunted places in Chattanooga, we love to recoemmend it as a place to stay for people looking for a haunted place to stay while visiting Chattanooga.

When you run a ghost tour company, whether it is in Chattanooga, New Orleans, Savannah...wherever, you are always looking for ways to improve your tour routes. After all, aside from your guide, the tour route is the most important part of the ghost tour itself. When we start looking for new locations to add to our ghost tours we start by talking to locals.

Here in Chattanooga, one of the locations that was brought up by a lot of people for a haunted tour stop is the Chattanooga Choo Choo. We know the other ghost tour company in town uses the Chattanooga Choo Choo as one of their ghost tour stops. So, we got to thinking, how can we visit the Chattanooga Choo Choo on the tour but present a whole different side to the story being told?

So, tonight we decided to head on over to the Chattanooga Choo Choo to talk with anyone willing to talk and to take photographs. Well, while we did get to take a number of photographs, like the one above, we didn't talk to anyone. Being a Holiday weekend, everyone was quite busy and we didn't want to be rude.

A Ghostly Experience at the Chattanooga Choo Choo

However, while we didn't get to talk to anyone we may have walked away with something better. After photographing the inside of the building, we went out back to where the trains are. We were the only one out there, pretty perfect. So, we went about my business, setting up the tripod and taking photographs of anything that looked interesting.

As we were photographing the main train body, we had our eyes trained to the camera. Through the glass, we watched a white figure come out from between two of the train cars. We immediately lifted my head to see it . . . but it was gone. Now, the owner of Ghost City Tours has been paranormal investigating for about 10 years. Tim, the owner, knows how to tell when something can be explained and when it is truly paranormal, and he is quick to tell the rest of us at Ghost City Tours what to look out for. This was a ghost. We had just seen a ghost moving through the trains at the Chattanooga Choo Choo.

That is all of the convincing we needed to include the Chattanooga Choo Choo on our ghost tours. We won't be visiting the Choo Choo in the next few weeks. It'll take some time to sit down with people who have experiences at the Choo Choo. We'll also spend a lot of time researching the grounds, the buildings, and any interesting characters to see if they contribute to the ghost stories.

Like we mentioned at the beginning, we want to ensure that when you take one of our Ghost Tours, it doesn't matter which city you take it in, that you'll be hearing more than what you could hear with someone else. After all, if we didn't take those extra steps to dig up the real story behind Chattanooga's hauntings and ghosts, we wouldn't be helping to expand Chattanooga's knowledge of her ghosts and history.

Hopefully, we'll see you on a ghost tour in Chattanooga soon! Stay Haunted!
