Long before it was a capital, this stretch of the Arkansas River was Quapaw country. By tradition, the French explorer Bénard de la Harpe named a rocky outcrop on the riverbank "La Petite Roche," the little rock, in 1722. In 1818 the Quapaw Line was surveyed due south from that rock as the boundary of Quapaw lands, and by 1824 the Quapaw had been forced to give those lands up. The town that took the rock's name became the capital of Arkansas Territory in 1821.

The Old State House, planned in 1833 to a design by Gideon Shryock, housed the first General Assembly when Arkansas became a state in 1836. A year later, on December 4, 1837, Speaker John Wilson stabbed Representative Joseph J. Anthony to death on the House floor. Union troops took Little Rock in September 1863, and in 1874 the Brooks-Baxter War, a fight over the disputed election of 1872, began when Joseph Brooks and armed supporters forced Governor Elisha Baxter out of the same building.

Ghost City Tours explores that history after dark: the real people, places, and events behind Little Rock's ghost stories, told by professional Ambassadors. Since 2012, we've built our reputation on a simple belief: the best ghost stories begin with real history. We'll tell you what the historical record shows, what local legend says, and what people have reported experiencing, and we'll always tell you which is which.

Why Take a Ghost Tour in Little Rock?

Ghost stories with substance, in Arkansas's capital

Little Rock has been Arkansas's capital for more than two centuries, and its history includes Quapaw lands on the Arkansas River, a lawmaker killed on the floor of the State House, a Civil War occupation, and a war fought over the governor's office.

Its ghost stories offer another way into that history, and a reason to see its historic streets after dark.

Named for a Rock

By tradition, Bénard de la Harpe named "La Petite Roche" on the Arkansas River in 1722, in Quapaw country.

Little Rock became the capital of Arkansas Territory in 1821 and has been the seat of government ever since.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Ghost City Tours in Little Rock? Here are some answers.

Is Little Rock haunted?

Little Rock has more than two centuries of history as Arkansas's capital, from Quapaw lands on the Arkansas River to a killing on the State House floor in 1837, the Civil War, and the Brooks-Baxter War of 1874. That history has produced its share of ghost stories, from shadowy figures reported at Mount Holly Cemetery to the man in a Homburg hat described at the Hornibrook Mansion. Some stories are tied to documented events; others are local legends and accounts told by people who experienced them. Whether the city is haunted is something you can decide for yourself.

Which Little Rock ghost tour is right for me?

Ghosts of Old Little Rock is our family-friendly tour for all ages, an entertaining discovery of Little Rock's people, history, and folklore, with age-appropriate ghost stories. The Dead Have Their Reasons is our adults-only tour (16+), which goes deeper into the city's darker history, from political violence and troubled lives to unsettling legends and reported hauntings. The two tours tell different stories. Adults-only means mature historical content, not a drinking tour, gore, or a deliberately terrifying experience.

Do the tours go inside the Old State House, Mount Holly Cemetery, or other buildings?

No. Both are walking ghost tours on the city's streets. They don't include admission to the Old State House, the MacArthur Museum, Mount Holly Cemetery, or any hotel, house, church, bar, or other building, and there are no paranormal investigations involved. The Hornibrook Mansion is a bed and breakfast with overnight guests, so we view it from the street.

Do you tell ghost stories about Central High School?

No. Little Rock's history of slavery, segregation, and the 1957 desegregation of Central High School, when nine Black students faced mobs to attend class, is real history about people who lived it, and many of them are still with us. Central High is a National Historic Site, and we talk about that history accurately when it's part of the city's story. We never turn it into a ghost story or a source of scares.

Are the stories true?

Our research begins with the actual history of a place. We don't invent murders, deaths, or hauntings, and we'll always tell you which parts of a story come from the historical record and which come from legend or reported encounters.

Are these walking tours?

Yes. All Ghost City Tours are walking tours led by a professional Ambassador, so you experience historic places as they were meant to be experienced.

What should I wear?

Comfortable walking shoes and clothing for the weather. Little Rock summer evenings are often hot and humid well after dark, so bring water. Winter nights can turn cold, so bring a jacket, and an umbrella if there's a chance of rain.

What is your Money Back Guarantee?

If you complete your tour and don't love it, let us know within 24 hours and we'll give you your money back. The guarantee applies to tours completed in full; it doesn't cover no-shows, early departures, or a tour being scarier (or less scary) than expected. We also offer a Best Price Guarantee when you book directly with us.

Where do the tours meet?

You'll receive exact meeting point details in your confirmation email.
