Milwaukee Ghost Tours
THE CREAM CITY • HISTORY AND LEGEND ON THE SHORES OF LAKE MICHIGAN
Long before Milwaukee was a city, the land where three rivers meet Lake Michigan was home to the Menominee, Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, and other Native nations. Its name likely comes from an Algonquian word for a good or pleasant land, or a gathering place by the water. Fur traders followed, and by the 1830s three rival settlements had grown up along the river: Juneautown, Kilbourntown, and Walker's Point. Their streets didn't line up, their founders didn't get along, and in 1845 a fight over a bridge turned into the Milwaukee Bridge War. On January 31, 1846, the three towns finally merged into the City of Milwaukee, with Solomon Juneau as its first mayor.
German immigrants poured in during the 1840s and the decades that followed; by 1900, about a third of the city's residents were of German background. They built breweries, businesses, and German-language theaters, and names like Pabst, Schlitz, and Miller made Milwaukee a national leader in beer. The pale local brick that faced so many of its buildings gave it another nickname: the Cream City.
Ghost City Tours explores that history after dark: the real people, places, and events behind Milwaukee's ghost stories, told by professional Ambassadors. Since 2012, we've built our reputation on a simple belief: the best ghost stories begin with real history. We'll tell you what the historical record shows, what local legend says, and what people have reported experiencing, and we'll always tell you which is which.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about Ghost City Tours in Milwaukee? Here are some answers.
Is Milwaukee haunted?
Milwaukee has nearly two centuries of history: a lake disaster, deadly fires, epidemics, and grand old buildings that have seen generations come and go. That history has produced its share of ghost stories, including the long-told tales of the Pfister Hotel, where visiting baseball players have described strange nights. Some stories are tied to documented events; others are local legends and accounts told by people who experienced them. Whether the city is haunted is something you can decide for yourself.
Which Milwaukee ghost tour is right for me?
The Ghosts of Milwaukee Tour is our family-friendly tour for all ages, focused on fascinating local history, legends, and age-appropriate ghost stories. The Woman in the Smoke is our adults-only tour (16+), exploring the darker chapters of Milwaukee's past, including the city's historic fires, with mature themes. Adults-only means mature historical content, not a drinking tour, gore, or a deliberately terrifying experience.
Do the tours go inside the Pfister Hotel or other buildings?
No. Both are walking ghost tours on the city's streets. They don't include admission to any hotel, theater, bar, or other building, and there are no cemetery visits or paranormal investigations involved.
Are the stories true?
Our research begins with the actual history of a place. We don't invent murders, deaths, or hauntings, and we'll always tell you which parts of a story come from the historical record and which come from legend or reported encounters.
Are these walking tours?
Yes. All Ghost City Tours are walking tours led by a professional Ambassador, so you experience historic places as they were meant to be experienced.
What should I wear?
Comfortable walking shoes and clothing for the weather. Milwaukee winters are cold and snowy, and even on summer evenings a breeze off Lake Michigan can make it feel cooler than you expect, so dress in layers.
What is your Money Back Guarantee?
If you complete your tour and don't love it, let us know within 24 hours and we'll give you your money back. The guarantee applies to tours completed in full; it doesn't cover no-shows, early departures, or a tour being scarier (or less scary) than expected. We also offer a Best Price Guarantee when you book directly with us.
