Tucson Ghost Tours
THE OLD PUEBLO • DESERT HISTORY, LEGENDS, AND REPORTED HAUNTINGS
People have lived and farmed along the Santa Cruz River here for thousands of years; canals in the Tucson Basin are the oldest known evidence of canal-irrigated farming in the United States, at least 3,500 years old. The city's name comes from the O'odham name for the dark base of Sentinel Peak, written down by the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Kino in the 1690s, and O'odham communities remain part of this region today. On August 20, 1775, Hugo O'Conor, an Irish-born officer in Spanish service, selected the site of the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson near the O'odham village.
Tucson was part of New Spain and, after 1821, of Mexico. The Gadsden Purchase made it American, and the Mexican garrison left in March 1856. Tucson served as the capital of Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877, and in March 1880 the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived, bringing new residents, among them Chinese workers and merchants, and new business to the Old Pueblo.
Ghost City Tours explores that history after dark: the real people, places, and events behind Tucson's ghost stories, told by professional Ambassadors. Since 2012, we've built our reputation on a simple belief: the best ghost stories begin with real history. We'll tell you what the historical record shows, what local legend says, and what people have reported experiencing, and we'll always tell you which is which.

Why Take a Ghost Tour in Tucson?
Ghost stories with substance, in the Old Pueblo
Tucson has one of the longest histories of human settlement in North America: thousands of years of O'odham and earlier Indigenous farming along the Santa Cruz River, followed by a Spanish presidio, a Mexican town, a territorial capital, and a railroad city.
Its ghost stories offer another way into that history, and a reason to see its historic streets after dark.
Thousands of Years Deep
People farmed along the Santa Cruz River here thousands of years before the Spanish presidio of 1775.
An O'odham Place Name
Tucson comes from the O'odham name for the dark base of Sentinel Peak.
Spanish, Mexican, American
A presidio in 1775, part of Mexico from 1821, American from 1856, and territorial capital from 1867 to 1877.
The Railroad Arrives
The Southern Pacific reached Tucson in March 1880 and changed the Old Pueblo for good.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about Ghost City Tours in Tucson? Here are some answers.
Is Tucson haunted?
Tucson has thousands of years of human history, from O'odham and earlier farming communities along the Santa Cruz River to a Spanish presidio, a Mexican town, a territorial capital, and a railroad city. That history has produced its share of ghost stories. Hotel Congress, for example, says guests have reported a woman in a long white dress sitting on the edge of the bed in Room 242. Some stories are tied to documented events; others are local legends and accounts told by people who experienced them. Whether the city is haunted is something you can decide for yourself.
Which Tucson ghost tour is right for me?
The Ghosts of Tucson Tour is our family-friendly tour for all ages, focused on Tucson's people, its long history, and the folklore of the Old Pueblo, with age-appropriate ghost stories. The Dead Wait for Sundown is our adults-only tour (16+), exploring the darker side of Tucson's past, from frontier danger and troubled lives to unsettling legends and reported hauntings, with mature themes. Adults-only means mature historical content, not a drinking tour, gore, or a deliberately terrifying experience.
Do the tours go out into the desert?
No. Both are historical walking ghost tours through Tucson after sunset, not excursions into the desert. The name The Dead Wait for Sundown refers to the atmosphere of the city after dark; it's a creative premise for an evening of many stories, not a single legend.
Do the tours go inside Hotel Congress, museums, or other buildings?
No. Both are walking ghost tours on the city's streets. They don't include admission to any hotel, museum, theater, church, house, bar, or other building, and there are no cemetery visits or paranormal investigations involved.
Do you treat El Tiradito and other cultural sites as haunted attractions?
No. Tucson's O'odham and Mexican American traditions are living traditions, not ghost stories, and we don't treat them as spooky props. El Tiradito, the Wishing Shrine in Barrio Viejo, is a good example: people still light candles and leave prayers there, and its legend has been recorded in more than twenty versions. When we talk about places like it, we talk about them as history and living culture.
Are the tours only about the Old West?
No. Tucson's story doesn't begin with the presidio of 1775 or end with the Old West. Our tours reach back to the O'odham and earlier communities who farmed along the Santa Cruz River for thousands of years, and forward through Spanish and Mexican Tucson, the territorial town, the railroad, and the families from many backgrounds who made the Old Pueblo home.
Are the stories true?
Our research begins with the actual history of a place. We don't invent murders, deaths, or hauntings, and we'll always tell you which parts of a story come from the historical record and which come from legend or reported encounters.
Are these walking tours?
Yes. All Ghost City Tours are walking tours led by a professional Ambassador, so you experience historic places as they were meant to be experienced.
What should I wear?
Comfortable walking shoes and clothing for the weather. Tucson summer evenings often stay hot well after sunset, so bring water. Desert winter nights cool off quickly once the sun goes down, so bring a jacket.
What is your Money Back Guarantee?
If you complete your tour and don't love it, let us know within 24 hours and we'll give you your money back. The guarantee applies to tours completed in full; it doesn't cover no-shows, early departures, or a tour being scarier (or less scary) than expected. We also offer a Best Price Guarantee when you book directly with us.
