Long before the Gold Rush, the land where the American River meets the Sacramento was home to the Nisenan and Plains Miwok people. In 1839 John Sutter established New Helvetia here, and the adobe fort he built in the early 1840s rose on Indigenous forced labor. In January 1848, James Marshall found gold at the site of Sutter's new sawmill at Coloma, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and John Sutter Jr. had a town laid out between the river landing and the fort. Sacramento had about 150 residents in 1849 and more than 9,000 a year later.

Sacramento became California's permanent capital in 1854. On January 8, 1863, the Central Pacific Railroad broke ground near the foot of K Street, and the line that four Sacramento merchants, Leland Stanford, Collis Huntington, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker, pushed over the Sierra Nevada was built largely by thousands of Chinese workers. Immigrants from China, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, and many other countries made their homes in the city.

Ghost City Tours explores that history after dark: the real people, places, and events behind Sacramento's ghost stories, told by professional Ambassadors. Since 2012, we've built our reputation on a simple belief: the best ghost stories begin with real history. We'll tell you what the historical record shows, what local legend says, and what people have reported experiencing, and we'll always tell you which is which.

Why Take a Ghost Tour in Sacramento?

Ghost stories with substance, in California's capital

Sacramento has more than 175 years of history as a Gold Rush boomtown, a river port, a railroad city, and California's capital, and the Nisenan and Plains Miwok lived here for generations before that.

Its ghost stories offer another way into that history, and a reason to see its historic streets after dark.

Gateway to the Gold Rush

Gold at Coloma in January 1848 turned a riverside landing into a city almost overnight.

Older Than the City

The Nisenan and Plains Miwok lived here long before Sutter's Fort was built.

Where the Railroad Began

The Central Pacific broke ground here in 1863, and thousands of Chinese workers built the line over the Sierra Nevada.

Fire, Flood, and Cholera

Disasters in the 1850s and 1860s reshaped the city, right down to the level of its streets.

History and Legend, Side by Side

Some stories come from the historical record. Others are local legends and accounts from people who experienced them.

No Believer Required

Researched Storytelling

We start with the actual history of a place, and we'll always tell you the difference between documented history and supernatural legend.

Professional Ambassadors

Our Ambassadors are selected and trained to be skilled storytellers, so the experience is engaging, not a dry history lecture.

Respect for the Dead

Many ghost stories begin with real human loss. We tell them thoughtfully, and we never turn the victims of the city's epidemics, fires, and floods into props for invented hauntings.

Storytelling, Not Gimmicks

No actors jumping out from behind buildings and no fake paranormal activity. Just historic places and strong stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Ghost City Tours in Sacramento? Here are some answers.

Is Sacramento haunted?

Sacramento packed a great deal of history into a short time: a Gold Rush boomtown, a cholera epidemic, fires and floods that forced the city to raise its streets, and the railroad and politics of California's capital. That history has produced its share of ghost stories, especially around the old riverfront and the Delta King riverboat. Some stories are tied to documented events; others are local legends and accounts told by people who experienced them. Whether the city is haunted is something you can decide for yourself.

Which Sacramento ghost tour is right for me?

Ghosts of the Golden Frontier is our family-friendly tour for all ages, focused on Sacramento's people, the Gold Rush, the river and the railroad, and the city's folklore, with age-appropriate ghost stories. Every Fortune Has a Ghost is our adults-only tour (16+), exploring the darker chapters of Sacramento's past, from cholera, fire, and flood to the violence and desperation of a boomtown, and its reported hauntings, with mature themes. Adults-only means mature historical content, not a drinking tour, gore, or a deliberately terrifying experience.

Do the tours go underground?

No. Both tours stay above ground. Sacramento really did raise the streets of its business district after the floods of the 1850s and 1860s, by about 10 to 12 feet, leaving hollow sidewalks and former ground floors below today's street level, and our Ambassadors talk about that history. The underground spaces themselves are shown on the Sacramento History Museum's own Underground Tours.

Do the tours go inside museums, the Delta King, cemeteries, or other buildings?

No. Both are walking ghost tours on the city's streets. They don't include admission to any museum, hotel, riverboat, house, bar, or other building, and there are no cemetery visits or paranormal investigations involved.

Are the tours only about the Gold Rush?

No. The Gold Rush is where Sacramento's story speeds up, but our tours reach further: the Nisenan and Plains Miwok people who lived here first, the immigrants from China, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, and beyond who built the city, the railroad, the politics of the capital, and the ordinary families who made a life here.

Are the stories true?

Our research begins with the actual history of a place. We don't invent murders, deaths, or hauntings, and we'll always tell you which parts of a story come from the historical record and which come from legend or reported encounters.

Are these walking tours?

Yes. All Ghost City Tours are walking tours led by a professional Ambassador, so you experience historic places as they were meant to be experienced.

What should I wear?

Comfortable walking shoes and clothing for the weather. Sacramento summer evenings can stay hot well after dark, so bring water. Winter nights are cool and often damp, sometimes with thick valley fog, so bring a warm jacket.

What is your Money Back Guarantee?

If you complete your tour and don't love it, let us know within 24 hours and we'll give you your money back. The guarantee applies to tours completed in full; it doesn't cover no-shows, early departures, or a tour being scarier (or less scary) than expected. We also offer a Best Price Guarantee when you book directly with us.

Where do the tours meet?

Our tours meet in central Sacramento. You'll receive exact meeting point details in your confirmation email.
