They came looking for gold. Some found fortunes. Others found an early grave.
There was a time when Sacramento seemed like a place where anything was possible.
Gold had been discovered in the nearby mountains, ships were arriving with people from around the world, and a settlement that barely existed a few years earlier was suddenly filled with merchants, gamblers, fortune seekers, and people willing to risk everything for a better life.
The promise was simple.
Come west. Get rich. Start over.
But Sacramento had a way of reminding people that fortune rarely came without a price.
Welcome to Every Fortune Has a Ghost, Ghost City Tours' adults-only walking ghost tour through the darker, more disturbing history of Sacramento, California.
During the Gold Rush, Sacramento became a city of extraordinary contrasts. Enormous wealth passed through its waterfront, and ambitious entrepreneurs built businesses almost overnight. Saloons, gambling establishments, hotels, and crowded boardinghouses filled the streets.
But behind the promise of instant prosperity was a much harsher reality.
Violence, disease, desperate circumstances, and the dangers of frontier life claimed lives throughout the rapidly growing settlement.
In 1850, a cholera epidemic swept through Sacramento, killing hundreds of residents and sending much of the population fleeing in terror.
Two years later, the Great Fire of 1852 destroyed most of the city's commercial district.
And the disasters kept coming.
Floodwaters repeatedly overwhelmed Sacramento, eventually forcing the city to undertake the extraordinary task of raising its streets above their original levels.
Buildings changed. Businesses disappeared. Streets were rebuilt over an earlier version of the city.
But not every story from those years disappeared with them.
And then there are the ghosts.
Over generations, historic Sacramento developed its share of supernatural legends, strange encounters, and stories about people who supposedly never left the places where they lived, worked, or met their end.
There are accounts of unexplained footsteps, figures appearing in old buildings, and mysterious experiences associated with Sacramento's historic waterfront and former businesses.
Some stories have roots in documented historical events. Others survive through folklore, reported encounters, and generations of local storytelling.
The history is real. Whether the dead are still among us is another question.
On Every Fortune Has a Ghost, you'll explore the darker side of Sacramento through accounts of tragedy, ambition, violence, mysterious deaths, and the supernatural legends associated with the city's past.
Your Ambassador will introduce you to the people behind the stories, from ambitious pioneers and wealthy merchants to ordinary residents whose lives were dramatically changed by the events unfolding around them.
You'll hear about a place where opportunity and danger often went hand in hand, and where even those who achieved great wealth couldn't escape the uncertainties of life on the frontier.
Some stories are disturbing. Others are simply difficult to explain.
All of them offer a different perspective on the Sacramento that visitors see today.
The Gold Rush made fortunes. It also left behind stories that money couldn't bury.
Every Fortune Has a Ghost is designed for adults who appreciate dark history, mature storytelling, and supernatural legends with a genuinely unsettling atmosphere.
We don't rely on cheap jump scares, costumed monsters, or fabricated paranormal encounters. Sacramento's real history provides more than enough material for a memorable evening.
Instead, you'll discover the people, places, and historical events that helped shape the city, along with the mysteries that continue to surround its past.
You don't have to believe in ghosts to appreciate the experience.
But as you walk through Sacramento's historic streets after dark, consider how many people once stood in those same places, convinced they were only one lucky break away from changing their lives forever.
Some became wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.
Others lost everything.
And for some, the final price was their life.
Today, the Gold Rush belongs to history. The gamblers have left their tables, the prospectors have moved on, and the fortunes that once seemed so important have passed into other hands.
But according to the ghost stories, a few former residents still have unfinished business.
Because in Sacramento, every fortune has a story.
And every fortune has a ghost.

Every Fortune Has a Ghost FAQ
Everything you need to know before you go
Is this tour appropriate for children?
Every Fortune Has a Ghost is an adults-only tour intended for guests 16 and older. For families, we recommend our all-ages Ghosts of the Golden Frontier tour.
What does "adults-only" mean on this tour?
It means mature historical content: epidemic, fire, violence, and desperate circumstances, discussed more frankly than on our family tour, along with genuinely unsettling ghost stories. It isn't a drinking tour, it isn't about gore, and it isn't designed to terrify you.
Is this a true-crime tour?
No. Dark history is part of the evening, but this is a ghost tour, not a true-crime tour. The supernatural stories stay at the center, and when we talk about real deaths and tragedies, like the cholera epidemic of 1850, we do it with respect for the people involved. We don't dwell on gore, we don't invent hauntings around real victims, and we don't repeat sensational claims as fact.
Does the tour go underground?
No. Our tours stay above ground. Sacramento really did raise the streets of its business district after the floods of the 1850s and 1860s, leaving hollow sidewalks and former ground floors below today's street level, and we talk about that history. The underground spaces themselves are shown on the Sacramento History Museum's own Underground Tours.
Does the tour go inside museums, hotels, or other buildings?
No. This is a walking tour on the city's streets. It doesn't include admission to any museum, hotel, riverboat, house, bar, or other building, and there are no cemetery visits or paranormal investigations involved.
Are the stories true?
Some stories have roots in documented historical events. Others survive through folklore, reported encounters, and generations of local storytelling. Your Ambassador will tell you which is which.
How long is the tour?
The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers about 1 mile of walking.
What time does the tour start?
Every Fortune Has a Ghost starts at 9:00 PM.
How much are tickets?
Tickets are $34.99 per person.
Are pets allowed on the tour?
Yes! Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome to join us on Every Fortune Has a Ghost.
What is your Money Back Guarantee?
If you complete your tour and don't love it, let us know within 24 hours and we'll give you your money back. The guarantee applies to tours completed in full; it doesn't cover no-shows, early departures, or a tour being scarier (or less scary) than expected. If your plans change, we're happy to reschedule at no cost.
What should I wear?
Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Sacramento summer evenings can stay hot well after dark, so bring water. Winter nights are cool and often damp, sometimes with thick valley fog, so bring a warm jacket.
What happens if it rains?
Our tours run rain or shine! We recommend bringing an umbrella if there's a chance of rain. In cases of severe weather, we'll contact you about rescheduling options.
Where does the tour start?
You'll receive exact meeting point details in your confirmation email.
Is Every Fortune Has a Ghost a walking tour?
Yes, all tours offered by Ghost City Tours, including Every Fortune Has a Ghost, are walking Ghost Tours. Don't worry, our tours are only about a mile in length and you'll have plenty of chances to rest along the way. Why be crammed into a Trolley, next to people you don't know, when you can experience our haunted locations as they were meant to be experienced?
