We follow the coast that wrecked ships and drowned sailors within sight of land, then turn inland to the night of November 9, 1878, when fire raced through the resort and swallowed whole blocks of it in a matter of hours. From there we step into the grand mansions that rose from the ashes, the Southern Mansion with its restless partygoer who still torments the living, and the Physick Estate, where one room carries a weight that visitors feel the moment they enter. These are not the gentle ghosts of the family tour.

How is this different from The Last Ship Home?
The Last Ship Home celebrates the seaside town and its friendlier spirits. Dark Water Rising goes deeper into the dark. We follow the bodies the bay gave back, the night fire tore through the resort, and the more troubling spirits of the old mansions, with the difficult details left intact instead of smoothed over.
How long is the tour?
Around 90 minutes on foot. We walk roughly a mile of flat streets through Cape May's historic district and linger at each stop long enough to do its story justice.
What time does Dark Water Rising start?
The tour runs nightly at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM and lasts about 90 minutes. Arrive a few minutes early to meet your guide before we set out into the dark.
Does the tour run in bad weather?
We walk in nearly all conditions, and a stormy night off the Atlantic suits this tour perfectly. If the weather turns dangerous, we'll reach out about rescheduling your booking.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes. Leashed, calm dogs are welcome to walk along, as long as yours is comfortable in a group for about 90 minutes by the shore.
Is Dark Water Rising a walking tour?
It is. Every Ghost City Tour is on foot, and Cape May's quiet, gaslit streets are best experienced that way, close to the old houses and the sound of the surf, rather than from a passing trolley.
