Nobody knows why the dead might refuse to leave. But in Little Rock, there are plenty of reasons to wonder.
Most people spend their lives trying to leave something behind.
A fortune. A family. A reputation. Some evidence that they were here and that their time on earth meant something.
But what happens when a life ends unexpectedly? When a terrible injustice goes unanswered? When a secret is taken to the grave, or a person dies believing their story isn't finished?
If the ghost stories are to be believed, sometimes the dead have unfinished business.
And Little Rock has more than its share of unsettling stories.
Welcome to The Dead Have Their Reasons, Ghost City Tours' adults-only walking ghost tour exploring the darker history and supernatural legends of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Little Rock has served as Arkansas's capital for more than two centuries. Behind its historic government buildings, grand homes, old hotels, and familiar downtown streets are stories of ambition, bitter rivalries, violence, and people whose lives took unexpected turns.
Some of those events would be difficult to believe if they weren't recorded in the history books.
In 1837, a heated political dispute inside the Arkansas State House ended when Speaker John Wilson fatally stabbed Representative Joseph J. Anthony.
It was a shocking act of violence inside the very building where lawmakers were supposed to settle their differences through debate.
Decades later, the disputed Arkansas gubernatorial election of 1872 led to the Brooks-Baxter conflict of 1874, when rival factions fought for control of the state government.
And these were hardly the only troubling events Little Rock witnessed.
The Civil War brought military occupation and political upheaval. Generations of residents experienced profound inequality, personal tragedy, financial ruin, and circumstances that shaped lives in ways the city's grand architecture doesn't begin to reveal.
Some stories became part of the historical record.
Others survived as whispers, rumors, and ghostly legends.
Over the years, Little Rock's historic buildings and neighborhoods have developed reputations for unexplained encounters. People have reported mysterious footsteps, figures appearing where nobody should be standing, and unusual experiences in places with long and complicated histories.
Do those stories suggest that someone never left?
Or have the events of the past simply given Little Rock an unusually rich collection of supernatural folklore?
Sometimes the most unsettling part of a ghost story isn't the apparition. It's discovering what happened to the person who supposedly became one.
On The Dead Have Their Reasons, you'll explore Little Rock's darker history through accounts of disturbing events, troubled lives, historical mysteries, and reported hauntings.
Your Ambassador will introduce you to the people behind the stories, revealing the decisions, conflicts, and circumstances that helped shape the city.
Some of these accounts are supported by historical records. Others have survived through local folklore and stories of unexplained encounters.
We believe the difference matters.
The Dead Have Their Reasons is designed for adults who appreciate mature historical subjects, darker storytelling, and ghost stories with a genuinely unsettling atmosphere.
This isn't a haunted-house attraction. You won't encounter theatrical monsters, staged paranormal activity, or people jumping out to frighten you.
Instead, you'll hear the history behind Little Rock's most disturbing stories and explore the possibility that some chapters of the city's past remain unfinished.
You don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy the experience.
But consider the generations who have lived and died in Little Rock. The people who achieved everything they wanted. Those who lost everything. And those whose lives ended before they ever had the chance to make things right.
History tells us what happened to some of them.
The ghost stories suggest that not everyone accepted the ending.
Perhaps some stayed because they had something to protect.
Others because they had something to hide.
And a few because they still had something to settle.
After all, if the dead truly walk among us, maybe there's a reason.
And in Little Rock, the dead have their reasons.

The Dead Have Their Reasons FAQ
Everything you need to know before you go
Is this tour appropriate for children?
The Dead Have Their Reasons is an adults-only tour intended for guests 16 and older. For families, we recommend our all-ages Ghosts of Old Little Rock.
What does "adults-only" mean on this tour?
It means mature historical content: political violence, troubled lives, and tragic deaths, discussed more frankly and in more depth than on our family tour, along with legends that have a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. It isn't a drinking tour, it isn't about gore, and it isn't designed to terrify you.
Does every ghost on the tour have a tragic reason for staying?
No. The name is a premise, not a promise that every ghost comes with a tragic backstory. Many reported hauntings have no known explanation at all, and we don't invent one. When a story is tied to a documented event, like the 1837 killing in the State House, we tell you what the record shows; when it's local lore or an account someone shared with us, we tell you that, too.
Is this a true-crime tour?
No. Dark history is part of the evening, but this is a ghost tour, not a true-crime tour. The supernatural stories stay at the center, and when we talk about real deaths and tragedies, we do it with respect for the people involved. We don't dwell on gore, we don't invent hauntings around real victims, and we don't repeat sensational claims as fact.
Do you tell ghost stories about Central High School or the civil rights era?
No. Little Rock's history of slavery, segregation, and the 1957 desegregation of Central High School, when nine Black students faced mobs to attend class, is real history about people who lived it, and many of them are still with us. We talk about that history accurately when it's part of the city's story, and we never turn it into a ghost story or a source of scares.
Does the tour go inside the Old State House or other buildings?
No. This is a walking tour on the city's streets. It doesn't include admission to the Old State House, the MacArthur Museum, Mount Holly Cemetery, or any hotel, house, church, bar, or other building, and there are no paranormal investigations involved.
Are the stories true?
Some of these accounts are supported by historical records. Others have survived through local folklore and stories of unexplained encounters. Your Ambassador will tell you which is which.
How long is the tour?
The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers about 1 mile of walking.
What time does the tour start?
The Dead Have Their Reasons starts at 9:00 PM.
How much are tickets?
Tickets are $34.99 per person.
Are pets allowed on the tour?
Yes! Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome to join us on The Dead Have Their Reasons.
What is your Money Back Guarantee?
If you complete your tour and don't love it, let us know within 24 hours and we'll give you your money back. What should I wear?
Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Little Rock summer evenings are often hot and humid well after dark, so bring water. Winter nights can turn cold, so bring a jacket, and an umbrella if there's a chance of rain.
What happens if it rains?
Our tours run rain or shine! We recommend bringing an umbrella if there's a chance of rain. In cases of severe weather, we'll contact you about rescheduling options.
Where does the tour start?
You'll receive exact meeting point details in your confirmation email.

Yes, all tours offered by Ghost City Tours, including The Dead Have Their Reasons, are walking Ghost Tours. Don't worry, our tours are only about a mile in length and you'll have plenty of chances to rest along the way.
