The Ghosts of Belcourt

The Haunted Gilded Age Castle of Bellevue Avenue

1891–1895•8 min read•By Tim Nealon
Belcourt was built to impress the richest summer colony in America. Then a family of collectors filled it with centuries-old armor, furniture, and stained glass from across Europe, and the stories began. Few houses in Newport have a haunted reputation quite like it.

A Castle Built for One Man

Most Newport mansions announce themselves from the street. Belcourt does something stranger. It looks less like a summer cottage than a French hunting lodge dropped onto Bellevue Avenue, all steep roofs and stone, as if it wandered over from another century and decided to stay.

That is not far from the truth. Belcourt was designed to evoke the Versailles hunting lodge of Louis XIII, and over the decades it filled up with objects that really had come from other centuries: armor, carvings, chandeliers, and furniture gathered from across Europe.

Old things carry old stories. At Belcourt, the family who lived with those things for nearly sixty years said some of the stories came with company.

Oliver Belmont's Bellevue Avenue Showpiece

Hunt and Belmont

Belcourt was commissioned by Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, a socialite and avid coachman, and designed by Richard Morris Hunt, the architect behind several of Newport's grandest houses. It was built between 1891 and 1895, modeled on the hunting lodge of Louis XIII at Versailles.

In 1896 Belmont married Alva Vanderbilt, and he gave her the house as a wedding gift. Belmont died in 1908, and the mansion passed through a long, quieter chapter after the height of the Gilded Age.

Belcourt Castle

In 1956 the Tinney family bought the estate. Harold and Ruth Tinney and their son Donald renamed it Belcourt Castle and filled it with their collection: European antiques, a replica gold coronation coach, and an Imperial Russian chandelier. For decades they opened it to visitors, and Donald's wife, Harle Tinney, became the keeper of the house's stories.

A New Steward

In 2012 Carolyn Rafaelian became Belcourt's steward and began a long private restoration. That work earned a Rhody Award for Historic Preservation in 2018. The house, now called Belcourt of Newport, offers guided tours by reservation; check the official site for current hours and ticketing before you go.

The Ghost Stories of Belcourt

The Robed Figure

The most famous Belcourt story comes from Harle Tinney herself. As recounted by Discover Newport, she woke one night to find a man standing beside the bed, dressed in a long brown robe. The figure walked away and disappeared through a wall.

Years later, during a remodel, the family found a doorway hidden in that same wall, right where the figure had seemed to exit. Whatever Harle saw that night, it apparently knew the house's old floor plan better than the people living in it.

The Screaming Armor

The Tinneys' collection included suits of armor, and one of them figures in another of Harle's accounts. In the ballroom, she said, a suit of armor appeared to scream. It is the kind of story that is easy to laugh off in daylight and much harder to laugh off in a dark ballroom full of empty helmets.

A Reputation Built Room by Room

Belcourt's reputation grew over decades of public tours under the Tinneys, as visitors heard these accounts in the very rooms where they were said to have happened. Today the house offers guided tours, including tours by candlelight, and its ghost stories remain part of Newport's local lore.

Who Lives at Belcourt?

Belcourt has had several owners, but the house has a way of outlasting all of them. Belmont built it, Alva received it, the Tinneys filled it, and a new steward restored it.

Through all of it, the stories stayed. Maybe that is because the objects inside came with histories longer than any of their owners. Or maybe, as Harle Tinney's accounts suggest, some of Belcourt's residents never needed a deed to stay.
