Did you know?
- The cemetery at Pegram was razed back in 1970, along with most of the graves.
- The soil was sold as fill dirt and was scattered across Pegram County, making it an attractive purchase for developers and road crews alike.
- After the remnants were sold, area homes began flooding and catching fire with alarming regularity.
- The casket of Mrs. Carrie Pegram Heath, namesake of the town of Pegram, was unearthed no less than six times after it was originally interred in 1949, and once more after the Pegram Cemetery was razed in 1970.
Shades of Poltergeist
In 2004, local NBC affiliate station WSMV ran a segment entitled "Shades of Poltergeist" regarding the eerie events unfolding at Pegram.
At that time, Mayor Charles Morehead acknowledged that the spirits were the result of digging up the town's old cemetery and selling the soil as fill.
All of this took place in the early '70s, before the "Poltergeist" trilogy was even made. Who knew that Hollywood had unknowingly taken a page from this small Tennessee town's book!
