The Cutler Majestic Theater

Where the Show Never Ends

Est. 19035 min readBy Tim Nealon
Built in 1903, the Cutler Majestic Theater is one of Boston's most stunning historic venues. This beautifully restored theater has hosted countless performances over the past century, and some believe that certain performers and audience members have never left. Staff and visitors report phantom applause, ghostly figures in period clothing, and the sound of mysterious footsteps on the empty stage.

The Cutler Majestic Theater stands as one of Boston's most magnificent historic venues, a testament to the golden age of American theater. Opened in 1903, this stunning Beaux-Arts theater has witnessed over a century of performances, and according to many who work there, some of those performances continue long after the final curtain call. From ghostly applause echoing through empty halls to phantom performers taking their eternal bows, the Cutler Majestic Theater is a place where the boundary between past and present seems remarkably thin.

Did you know?

  • The Cutler Majestic Theater was designed by architect John Galen Howard and opened on February 16, 1903, as a venue for opera and Broadway productions.
  • The theater's original name was simply "The Majestic Theatre" and it could seat over 1,600 patrons in luxurious surroundings.
  • During the 1950s and 60s, the theater fell into disrepair and was used as a movie house before closing in 1983.
  • A major restoration project in the 1990s brought the theater back to its original glory, and it now serves as the home of the Emerson College Performing Arts Center.
  • Staff members report that paranormal activity increased significantly after the restoration, as if the renovation awakened dormant spirits.

Paranormal Activity at the Cutler Majestic

The Phantom Mayor

One of the most frequently reported spirits at the Cutler Majestic is believed to be that of a former mayor of Boston who attended the theater's grand opening in 1903. Witnesses describe seeing a distinguished gentleman in formal early 20th-century attire seated in one of the box seats, watching performances with great interest. When approached, the figure simply vanishes. Theater staff have nicknamed this spirit "The Mayor" and some claim to have felt his presence during important performances, as if he's still keeping watch over the venue he helped dedicate.

The Lady in White

Perhaps the most famous ghost of the Cutler Majestic is a mysterious woman dressed in a flowing white gown, often seen in the upper balcony seats. Some believe she was an actress who performed at the theater during its early years, while others think she may have been a patron who had a particular fondness for the venue. She's been spotted by audience members, ushers, and performers alike, always sitting alone, seemingly absorbed in whatever performance is taking place on stage. When the house lights come up, she's gone.

Ghostly Standing Ovations

One of the most unnerving phenomena reported at the theater is the sound of phantom applause. Stage managers and crew members working late at night have heard the unmistakable sound of hundreds of hands clapping, echoing through the empty auditorium. Some witnesses report that the applause sounds distant, as if coming from another time. On several occasions, performers have heard applause before their shows even begin, interpreted by some as the theater's ghosts showing their approval.

The Backstage Presence

The backstage areas of the Cutler Majestic are reportedly home to several spirits. Performers and crew members describe feeling watched while preparing for shows, and some have reported seeing shadowy figures moving through the wings. Footsteps are frequently heard on the empty stage late at night, and props and costumes have been found mysteriously moved from their assigned locations. Some believe these are the spirits of past performers, still going through their pre-show routines decades after their deaths.

Brief History of the Cutler Majestic Theater

The Cutler Majestic Theater opened on February 16, 1903, designed by renowned architect John Galen Howard in the Beaux-Arts style. It was built during Boston's theater boom at the turn of the 20th century, when the city was becoming a major stop for touring Broadway productions and opera companies.

The theater's early years were marked by spectacular performances and sold-out shows. The venue hosted some of the biggest names in entertainment, from opera singers to vaudeville acts to legitimate theater productions. The ornate interior, featuring elaborate plasterwork, crystal chandeliers, and plush seating, made it one of the most luxurious theaters in New England.

However, by the 1950s, changing entertainment tastes and the rise of television led to declining attendance. The Majestic was converted to a movie theater, and much of its original grandeur was hidden behind modernization. By 1983, the building was in such poor condition that it was forced to close.

Emerson College purchased the theater in 1983, but it wasn't until the 1990s that a major restoration project began. The $16 million renovation painstakingly restored the theater to its original 1903 appearance, revealing the beautiful architecture that had been hidden for decades. The theater reopened in 2003, exactly 100 years after its original opening, and now serves as the Emerson College Cutler Majestic Theatre.

Many believe that this restoration awakened the spirits that had been dormant during the theater's decline. Staff members report that paranormal activity increased dramatically after the renovation, as if the ghosts were pleased to see their beloved theater restored to its former glory.
