Houston's founding in 1836, the same year as the Texas Revolution, means the city was born in blood. The nearby San Jacinto Battlefield, where Texas won its independence, is said to be haunted by the spirits of soldiers from both armies who fell in the decisive 18-minute battle.
The city's rapid growth through oil booms and busts created a landscape of tragedy. Industrial accidents, fires, and the darker side of boomtown life have left their spiritual mark. The Houston tunnels, an underground network of passages beneath downtown, are particularly known for paranormal activity.
Yellow fever epidemics ravaged Houston repeatedly in the 19th century, filling cemeteries to overflowing. Many of these burial grounds were later built over as the city expanded, disturbing the dead and stirring up supernatural activity.
Houston's humid climate and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico have always made it vulnerable to devastating hurricanes. The 1900 Galveston Hurricane killed thousands in the greater Houston area, and the spirits of storm victims are said to wander the region to this day.
